Part Number: OEM18040410
Manufacturer Part Number: WP8573713

The Thermal Cut-Off is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dryers. It serves as a crucial safety component, automatically disconnecting power to the dryer's heating element if temperatures rise too high. This protects against overheating that could potentially cause a fire.

Symptoms of a bad thermal cut-off can include:

  • dryer failing to heat during cycles
  • abnormal noises or smells coming from the dryer
  • error codes related to temperature
  • loose/damaged wires near the heating element

Causes of failure typically involve repeated exposure to excessive heat over long periods of use, though sometimes surges or physical damage can also trigger problems.

This Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Answer

Hello Kevin, This unit will need to be put into the diagnostics to pull the fault codes. This is fully explained in the tech sheet. This is normally located inside the control panel. 1. Be sure the dryer is in standby mode (plugged in with all indicators off, or with only the Done indicator on). 2. Select any one button (except Power) and follow the steps below, using the same button (remember the button): Press/hold 2–5 seconds, Release for 2–5 seconds, Press/hold 2–5 seconds, Release for 2–5 seconds, Press/hold 2–5 seconds 3. If this test mode has been entered successfully, all indicators on the console are illuminated for 5 seconds with 88 showing in the Estimated Time Remaining two-digit display. The codes are explained in the tech sheet also.
