The Thermal Cut-Off is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dryers. It serves as a crucial safety component, automatically disconnecting power to the dryer's heating element if temperatures rise too high. This protects against overheating that could potentially cause a fire.

Symptoms of a bad thermal cut-off can include:

  • dryer failing to heat during cycles
  • abnormal noises or smells coming from the dryer
  • error codes related to temperature
  • loose/damaged wires near the heating element

Causes of failure typically involve repeated exposure to excessive heat over long periods of use, though sometimes surges or physical damage can also trigger problems.

This Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermal Cut Off (Part Number: OEM18040410)

Steven, There should be a peep hole in the lower left side of the front panel. Pop the cover off and turn the dryer on. If the flame is going out in a very short period then this would be a faulty valve with the coils having already been replaced.

Hello Kevin, This unit will need to be put into the diagnostics to pull the fault codes. This is fully explained in the tech sheet. This is normally located inside the control panel. 1. Be sure the dryer is in standby mode (plugged in with all indicators off, or with only the Done indicator on). 2. Select any one button (except Power) and follow the steps below, using the same button (remember the button): Press/hold 2–5 seconds, Release for 2–5 seconds, Press/hold 2–5 seconds, Release for 2–5 seconds, Press/hold 2–5 seconds 3. If this test mode has been entered successfully, all indicators on the console are illuminated for 5 seconds with 88 showing in the Estimated Time Remaining two-digit display. The codes are explained in the tech sheet also.

Dryer will not heat. (Sort of a long story) Had service tech work on dryer. He said the thermal cutoff was bad and ordered another one. Several days later he showed up but forgot the part… Several days later they called to reschedule due to vehicle problems. We asked them to send part. Several days later we received the thermal cutoff ($0.60 postage due) After installing the part the dryer would run, burner would work but would not dry clothes. Clothes did not feel very hot. In desperation, we ordered and installed the thermistor and moisture sensor. Same problem. We called different repair tech. This guy said that the vent was partially obstructed. (It was a flex pipe). We purchased and installed a much better vent tube. Dryer now will run but the burner would not. Checked and found the thermal cutoff was open. ??? Ordered and installed new thermal cutoff. This one failed before drying one load of clothes. In absence of an actual schematic I am at a loss as why the thermal cutoff would fail at all and now so quickly. Is it heat, or high current??? Do you have a possible solution? I am tired of waiting and paying service techs that apparently are, well, not so good.

Hello Randy. Usually this is due to a restricted vent in the unit. Remove the vent pipe and make sure the air duct assembly and the blower wheel is clean on the dryer. Then run the dryer with the vent unhooked and see if it blows the cut-off. If not, venting issue.

Hello Philip. It should read closed for continuity. If it is open, it is bad. Closed should be 0 ohms. Hope this helps.
