Manufacturer Part Number: WP2188819

The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It plays a critical role in regulating the temperature within the refrigerator and freezer compartments by monitoring and sending temperature readings to the control board, which then adjusts the cooling system accordingly.

Causes of a bad thermistor can include electrical faults, exposure to moisture, or physical damage from mishandling. A faulty thermistor can lead to incorrect temperature readings, causing the refrigerator to overcool or not cool sufficiently.

Symptoms of a bad Thermistor include:

  • Inconsistent temperatures within the refrigerator or freezer
  • The refrigerator running constantly or not at all
  • Spoiled food due to improper cooling
  • Error codes related to temperature regulation

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Diy for Model Number WRT519SZDW02

My Whirlpool upright top freezer is not cooling or freezing. I cleaned all the coils. All fans are working. The compressor seems to be fine. I have read the resistance on the thermistor from the freezer and get a reading of 2.4 at room temperature and 7.9 in a glass of ice water.. The thermistor from the bottom part of the refrigerator has a reads a resistance of 2.8 at room temperature and 8.1 in the glass of ice water. When I read those wires from both thermistors through the wire harness at the computer board, I do not get any reading at all. My questions are: 1. Are the thermistors good, or do they need replaced? 2. Does the wire harness need to be replaced because I am not getting the same resistance readings?

Answer

DIY, Yes, it sounds like the thermistors are OK, as long as there is a resistance reading. The manufacturer did not publish the resistance readings for the thermistors in the tech data sheet or service manual. You can also check for 5 VDC at the CN2 connector on the main control board(across the gray and pink wires). Just be careful doing voltage checks. Yes, you should have the same resistance reading at the control board, as you do at the thermistor. The majority of the wiring harness is located inside the cabinet, and can;t be repaired or replaced, so you'll need to check the connectors and the board control terminals for loose . broken or frayed wires.
