Answer Joe K., You don't necessarily have to "sand" but there is some preparation needed. Basically, Remove loose rust from repair area. Clean repair area with rubbing alcohol and let dry. Shake bottle well before using. Apply coating to repair area, overlapping the existing finish. For best results, apply multiple coats(2 or 3) and let dry 30 minutes between coats.
