Answer Connie, It sounds like someone twisted the knob and the shaft of the valve. Your stove has three different valves, and five burners. We will need to know which burner valve is damaged to get you the correct valve to repair the range( right front, center, left rear,etc.) Yes you will need to raise the cooktop, and remove the manifold panel to access the burner valves.
