How to Troubleshoot & Replace Frigidaire AP5802148 / 242278801 Thermistor Assembly

New damper assembly. The fridge was not cooling. Also, light frost in the freezer but the defrost system was working. The bottom of the damper vent was plugged with ice (down next to the coil). I removed the ice plug and replaced the damper assy. I also replaced the fridge thermistor (most likely unnecessary but I did it anyway while I was in there). Everything works perfectly now. The damper was stuck in the closed position (bad motor or broken gears).

Removed bottom bin and noted ice in the vents to evap coils. Removed back cover of freezer section and used hair dryer to manually thawed large ice block. Used electric meter to confirm defrost element and thermostat were good. Noted damper door was closed and would not open. Damper motor was bad. Opted to replace damper assembly and thermistors. Replaced parts and refrigerator is working great. I decided to open damper door manually in order to use refrigerator while waiting on parts. Taped damper vent off at night to prevent items from freezing. 

Noticed the damper was not opening. Had no airflow between frig and freezer. Replaced damper and thermistor. Fixed the problem. 

I thoroughly cleaned the condenser and condenser fan and made sure they were fully operational and the compressor was also still good, I then removed the control housing and checked the damper motor for continuity. Knowing all were in good shape process of elimination told me the control assembly and or the thermistor were bad. The thermistor is very inexpensive and if you're replacing the control you should also replace the thermistor which reads both the freezer and the refrigerator and are housed in the same housing as the control and all are easy to replace and worth the time! Start to finish including troubleshooting and cleaning, it took about an hour. The fridge works like new . By the way the problem occurred due to a power surge after 8hrs without power. 

I took out assembly with damper and control panel, five screws. At first, I thought it was just frozen closed, so I opened the damper and put it back in, then the refrigerator side got too cold. The damper stuck open, I changed out the damper and thermistor in 15 minutes and everything is working fine 

Damper door stuck open and froze filter. Replaced damper assembly with sensors. Also replaced the filter. 

Replaced the damper assembly and thermistor assembly. Only 5 screws to remove the housing along the top and center wall on the refrigerator side. 

Replaced damper and thermistor while I was in there. 

Vacuumed and made sure everything was clear. Checked to see if anything was iced up and wasn’t. Replaced the damper and thermistor. Everything works well. Problem fixed.
