How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP6888676 / WB26X32629 Magnetron

Replaced the Magnetron. 

REPLACE THE MAGNETRON. 

Put a new one myself. It was easy following instructional videos. 

Since it could have been any one or more of three parts, I decided to purchase all three parts, knowing that AppliancePartsPro would accept returns. I didn't have a driver to remove the security screws, so I used a Vicegrip. I recommend purchasing the correct tool. Two of the parts arrived very soon after I ordered them. The magnetron was back ordered. First I replaced the diode, and then the capacitor, neither of which repaired the microwave. When the magnetron arrived, I immediately replaced it, and the repair worked. Excellent instructions from AppliancePartsPro, and fast delivery. 

Followed some YouTube videos to diagnose a faulty Magnetron. Also replaced the capacitor and high voltage diode is recommended. Be very careful as the capacitor holds 2100 volts which can kill you. Discharge it first before doing anything. All instructions are on YouTube but if you have any doubt about your capabilities call factory service. GE wanted $450+ for labor alone!

We had a technician come to the house to check it out. He confirmed that the magnetron was bad and said he could replace it for $400. I got on youtube to see how difficult the repair was and decided to do it myself. I got on appliancepartspros.com to order the part and to get additional tips and info for doing the repair. The part came in a few days and putting it in was simple. We are back in business for about $175. 

Replaced the magnetron in our GE Profile Microwave. I viewed a couple of YouTube videos and did the repair myself. It was even easier than it appeared in the video. Maybe 45 minutes out and back in with a power screwdriver. 

I looked at youtube to troubleshoot. I ordered two switches (#604) and attempted to replace them myself. The available youtube videos didn't address my specific model and I could not get the latch assembly (#605) behind the control panel that held the switches out without further disassembly. I was concerned about getting shocked by the capacitor (instructions to discharge were on youtube) so I contacted a local repairman and dropped the unit off. The repairman fixed it for $35 and knew a trick to replace the switches without taking out the assembly. He said and alignment for the door switches could be tricky if the latch assembly was removed so removing/replacing the switches in place was the best option. That made sense to me. One of the two switches that were replaced was definitely bad. It had a dark spot when viewed from the side. It was not visible when installed in I also ordered a magnetron. There was no indication the unit was bad but the microwave is six years old and I've had one go bad before. It was another problem source in one of the youtube videos. I had the technician replace it. The unit is installed in a cabinet above the oven. It took me about an hour to remove the unit, an hour to attempt to replace the switches, and an hour to reinstall it.
