How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3119063 / 80040 Washer Agitator Dogs

Ordered new dogs to replace the old ones when I took out the agitator assembly one of the dogs was broken there are four in the unit this is what was causing it not to turn when I discussed this over the phone with the gentleman who answered the phone to help me is very knowledgeable; personable, relatable, helpful and friendly. He gave me good honest information about how often the dogs need to be replaced and if anything else needed to be replaced or not. I put it back together and it works like a new machine. 

Replaced the two springs that hold it in place. 

Replaced the agitator dogs and their containment cage. I also replaced the "thrust bearing" between the upper and lower agitator sections. Took a 7/16 socket and long extension and about five minutes - a quick fix! We bought good Sears Kenmore appliances in 1992 when we bought this house, and with the help of APP, I've been able to keep them ALL running and performing perfectly - through a house restoration, raising three kids, and four dogs. Upstairs and downstairs washer and gas dryers, dishwasher, refrigerator-freezer, small gas stove, gas range, electric double oven - all from 1992 - all in use today. 

Replace the drive block nut and the brake clutch shaft assembly. Also needed the agitator dogs to be replaced. 

The cost of a new washer spurred me on to quickly repair this old girl. The videos I located did not show how to take this unit apart, but some were close enough to figure it out. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I followed the video to replace the dogs, although this one was different the video made it quite simple to do. I also replace the broken clip and water pump like the video indicated. On that, I had to carefully file the end of the motor shaft to remove enough rust to get the original shape of the shaft to fit snuggly. It took hours of careful fussing and filing to do this. When done, the machine powered up very nicely and once again operated normally. Thank you. 

Replaced the spin clutch. It was visibly worn compared to replacement unit. It was not "hard" to do, but takes general mechanical skill, and real tools. Do lay out an old blanket, cause there will be some water spilled. While you're in there, change out the motor coupling, The original is plastic, and was worn where the motor shaft connects. The new has metal inserts that will not wear like the plastic drives did. suggest doing agitator dogs as well, cause they are inexpensive and do wear. The repair goes easy enough, but suggest to make some room when doing this. Marking 2+ hours cause we had limited space to do this, had to remove a dishwasher, and the back laundry room door because we need room to maneuver things. If you're work space is wide open, you have the tools on hand, and can stay focused -IE no pets or children running under your feet, its a hours job at worst. 

SO EASY! I just followed the video and inspected the parts - the agitator dogs were extremely worn and the thrust washer was broken. I ordered both parts, they were here 2 days later, and it took me about 15 minutes to install them. My washing machine is like new again! The whole thing cost $20. A visit from an appliance guy is $110 to just show up, the charges go up from there.

I followed the video instructions at AppliancePartsPros.com, ordered the parts (4 washer agitator dogs) and installed them easily myself when they arrived at my doorstep. The shipping was incredibly fast. 

I replaced the clutch and brake, the power coupling and the agitator dogs. The repairs went well. A friend of mind told me to also pull the pump and check for obstructions. When I pulled the pump I discovered a doll baby swim suit had lodged in the pump and was preventing it from turning. After I removed the clothing and reassembled the washer, it ran fine.
