How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6022400 / WPW10503278 Refrigerator Electronic Control Board

Installed control board. There was no information sheet with part. There was no info sheet underneath the appliance either. We bought this frig new a few years ago. Underneath was no info sheet, only the plastic bag it was supposed to be in. Got necessary information on the internet on what to do. 

After reading the tech sheet that comes with the fridge i forced it into defrost and ordered a jazz board. i watched a video on youtube on how to change it and was able to change the part in under 15 minutes, without using any tools 

I had a power outage with several rapid on/off cycles and when the power was finally fully restored, the fridge side froze all the food. I tried unplugging the fridge for a few mins to reset it, no luck. Tried changing the set point to the warmest setting- no luck. The thermistor tested ok with resistance (Ohm's) changing in cold water vs. heat. I could not see anything wrong on the board visually, but changed it out and fridge works again maintaining above freezing temps. Reprogramming the board was easy as per the directions and video example from this site. Careful handling the board. You have to "snap" the board at a scored line and it's a little tricky (at least I did on my fridge because that is how it fits in place and is retained). I wore rubber gloves and was careful to not touch the board components. The freezing also cracked my water filter and the water filter assembly on the fridge side and I had to replace those too. 

Needed new control board. 

I read previous experiences and people suggested starting with the board. I replaced the board as shown in the tutorial videos and manually defrosted the freezer with a hair dryer. The install was VERY easy and it resolved the issue. 

This problem started 5 or 6 years ago. Warm refrigerator section. The first time we just emptied the fridge and freezer and left the door open for a few days, then plugged it back it to see if it would still work or if it was time to buy a new one ( the unit was only about 2-3 years old ). I first replaced the damper and thermistor thinking that they may have been the problem. But after a few days the symptoms returned. The only issue I ran into was that I needed to press the refrigerator down arrow three times and not the freezer, so there may have been something strange with this part. After I turned the power back on to the refrigerator, I needed to manually move the damper plastic cylinder a slight bit to the right for the board to realize it was stuck open, and everything worked correctly after that. 

Local appliance guy diagnosed control panel had to be replaced for $100, and was charging $450 to replace.
