How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6018794 / WPW10289690 Refrigerator Ice Maker Cover

Thanks to this website's suggestion, we replaced the icemaker by simply following along with the video that was posted! Super helpful, and easy! Much quicker and cheaper to repair than hiring someone. We did this with my husband's hand bandaged up from surgery, so I was his helper! I was able to do some of it myself, and I am NOT handy at all. Once we removed the icemaker, we did notice that the metal was flaking off (as another reviewer mentioned). But my husband thinks our problem was either that the heating element was bad, so the ice wouldn't release, or the bail was locked into place. Many, many thanks for the helpful advice and suggestions! 

Ordered a genuine Whirlpool part from AppliancePartsPros.com. It was worth every penny. No leaking, cubes are all separate. Lesson learned that you get what you pay for. I will stop buying generic junk ice makers from online retailers and come back here if/when I need a replacement. 

Replaced entire ice maker. 

Thanks to Covid 19 my wife was working from home and she caught the problem before it flooded our kitchen. I ordered a new ice maker, lift arm, and cap. All came in one box and were the correct parts in factory condition. Perfect fit on a 17 year old fridge and its working great!!! Thanks 

In Both repairs, I did a few "APP.com" YOUTUBE tutorial vid's. EXCELLENT! I purchased new maker & harness, installed both, YHATZEE! WE HAVE ICE! For the H2O issue, the unit needed completely defrosted. Installed the updated 'J' trap drain, gave it a REAL defrosting [the drain PLUG was especially frozen]. Reassembled and we are now GOOD TO GO. 

I first purchased the recommended ice maker on the website and utilized the video to remove the old ice maker from the refrigerator. Removal was easy. Upon switching the required hardware from the old ice maker to the new ice maker, I realized that I would need to purchase a new wiring harness and ice maker cover. The new parts arrived in a couple of days. I installed the new ice maker in a matter of minutes. We had ice being produced in a few hours. 

Needed to address the design change with a new wiring harness and end cap. Worked perfectly. 

Replaced controller 

I am not a plumber, but very good with anything mechanical. I uninstalled the broken icemaker, swapped the wiring and ice bar from the old icemaker to the new one, and installed the new icemaker all in 12 minutes and 37 seconds from start to finish, which includes pulling out the two freezer baskets and pulling off the freezer door. This repair could not have been any simpler. Great product!
