How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3178588 / 8193762 Dishwasher Fuse Kit

Hoped it was a fuse but didn't know if dishwasher had a fuse. Entered model number into Appliance Parts Pro website and was presented with their wonderfully laid out parts explosion and sure enough, there was a fuse. Clicked on the fuse and OMG there was a video showing how to replace it. Without the video I probably would not have done it myself. Ordered the part, it arrived two days after I ordered it and replaced it just as was shown in the video. 

Watched video. Mine has the stainless steel trim so I removed the torx crews around the inside liner of the door. I lifted the black control panel trim cover and removed the two wire attachments WITHOUT cutting the wires as suggested in the included instructions and the video. I unsnapped the old fuse and snapped in the new fuse. I then reattached the existing wire connectors. So I did not add the included wire harness and it works fine. The original one lasted 11 years. 

The dishwasher is on a dedicated circuit so I tried cycling power at the circuit breaker. No change. Searching online I discovered the thermal fuse that is in the control panel, ahead of all the control panel components, so I assumed that was a good place to start. I shut off power to the dishwasher, removed the six screws that attach the control panel, and found the fuse in an easy to access location. I disconnected the leads to the fuse and checked continuity through the fuse. Sure enough the fuse was open. I ordered the new fuse from Appliance Parts Pro and it arrived quickly. It was easy to replace following the instructions that came with the new part. Total time to repair, including diagnosis, was less than half an hour. Dishwasher is now running well, but I'm watching for any indication of a problem that caused the fuse failure in the first place. 

No power to dishwasher control panel? Shut off power for dishwasher at main breaker. Opened the dishwasher door just enough to access and remove the crosstip screws which hold the plastic front cover and control panel (keypad) in place . Once the cover is loose the back of the control panel can be accessed. There is a plastic cover over the circuit board that must be unsnapped and removed. Once removed the blown Thermo Fuse can be removed and tested. Test it by using a test meter and conducting a continuity test. If there is no conductivity it is blown. Replace the Thermo Fuse with a new one and make sure you use the new leads (harness) supplied with it. Failure to use the new leads containing a length of new wires and connectors will lead to premature failure of the new Thermo Fuse. Put the plastic circuit board cover back in place, snaps on, and postion the front cover and keyboard in place and secure it with the crosstip screws you removed earlier. Turn power on at the main breaker and check to verify you have power to the dishwasher control panel (keypad). If you do, job done! 

My family's dishwasher died one day soon after we had bought a new fridge out of necessity. We definitely could not afford to buy a new dishwasher so soon. I researched online, and was led to this website. I ordered the fuse kit. It arrived the next day to my surprise. The actual repair took about 30 minutes, but only because I had to manually strip the wires (did not have the tool for this). Once I was finished and restored power, the dishwasher started up rigt away. So far, it is working perfectly. This simple kit saved my family at least $500. By the way, I am a mother in her 30's and not a handyman at all. 

Removed the front cover, located the fuse, removed both wires attached to the fuse, tested the fuse with an ohm meter (it was zero ohms meaning its trashed). Ordered new part from APP, it arrived in less than two days. Installed new fuse, put everything back together, plugged in the appliance and wha-la, good to go. The new kit comes with a connecting lead preatached where you are suppose to cut the old leads and splice into the new leads via a set screw. What I did was remove the leads from the new fuse and installed the old leads directly to the fuse. I saw no reason for another splice in the wiring harness leading to the fuse. Also I want to thank APP for vast selection of repair parts, fair pricing, timely service and a great website that's easy to search. I've have great success in repairing other appliances with APP and this one was no different. Thanks APP. 

After what feels like 100 years the heating element died. The replacement was super easy and I decided to replace the chopper and a worn out control panel. 

I read all the fixes and saw the over temp resistor was the most likely problem. I pulled the resistor out following the directions in the video. Checked the resistor with my multi meter and as expected it was 0 ohms/open. Ordered parts online and they arrived in 2 days. Replaced bad resistor with the new unit and the dishwasher was working again. Very simple fix. I'm not sure why they have you replace the connection/cables. I checked the old connection for any corrosion or arcing and it looked fine. I just didn't see the logic of adding 4 more wire connections with the new wire harness that could possibly come loose or corode. 

Replaced with the kit provided. Use the whole kit, replacing just the fuse led to premature failure. 

Using the videos found on the website I easily replaced the parts and the dishwasher is back to working 100%
