How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP4242489 / LA-1006 Dryer Drum Front Glide Kit

First time DIY dryer repair. Videos very helpful! Remove front. Found glides worn thin, paint on drum removed where glides located. Drum, cage and motor turned easily - must be OK. Thirteen year old dryer. Order glides & felt, might as well replace belt and rollers while there. First time order - could not have been easier! Received 2nd day. Replaced parts, reassembled & connected power. Ran for 3 minutes with scraping noise then stopped with burning odor. Disassembled dryer, smelled odor from motor. Could have replaced motor using your part and video but not cost effective with basic model. Time for a new dryer. Will return parts but use your site for other appliance part purchases. Completely satisfied! 

After researching a new dryer, and finding out how expensive and lower-quality they have become, I elected to rebuild our fifteen-year-old high-end Maytag dryer. I replaced the motor, the idler assembly, the wheel bearings, and glides. The total cost was about $300 and it took about 2 hours total. It's running like a top now and is essentially rebuilt. This was a much better outcome than purchasing a new dryer and trashing the old one. I would rate my skillset as high, but I don't see why anyone couldn't research how to do this and accomplish it on their own. The AppliancePartsPros videos, YouTube, and other sources total research time about 20 or 30 minutes. I highly recommend you consider doing this if your dryer motor fails. 

Found that the area between the filter screen and blower motor was completely blocked with lint after 30 years of use (go figure). Also found that the glide strips supporting the front of the tumbler were warn and the underlying felt pads had shifted out from under the strips, allowing metal to metal contact. Removed the lint, thoroughly cleaned the inside of the cabinet, replaced the glide strips and felt pads, inspected the motor and rear roller supports, reassembled, and it now works as good as new. I am very impressed with AppliancePartsPros.com. Their online video was helpful. I ordered the parts needed on Thursday night, they shipped Friday, and showed up at my door at mid Saturday. I was able to do laundry by Saturday afternoon. 

Checked a few things, got an online diagnosis, and figured the thermostat went bad. Found a couple of other things that needed repairs, ordered parts from AppliancePartsPros.com, and received them the next day ! Installed parts and was up and running. I could not have called a repair co. for this and get fixed so quickly. 

Was expecting a glider to be worn out that supports the front of the drum. Found the blower wheel rounded out inside it’s nylon hub and so it spun almost freely on the motor driveshaft. The right glider which supports most of the weight of the front of the tub, was worn down but, did not make any noise there. I replaced it anyway. It was an electric Crosley dryer. There were a few screws that required a small Allen wrench. Also you need a set of snap ring pliers that have straight bills on them to take the snap ring off the shaft that secures the blower wheel. Did a complete cleaning with a vacuum on the inside. The lady was very happy. I also pointed out that she had a high-quality dryer and it was worth saving. There was a fair amount of pride in engineering. 

Went online to find the parts breakdown. Ordered my parts and they were delivered the next day. 

I took the Dryers apart used the genuine Maytag repair parts I ordered from Appliance Parts Pros and in less than an hour my Dryer was fixed! 

Found a do it yourself video on YOUTUBE for the exact model, Ordered parts from AppliancePartsPros and in less than 1/2 hour, had the dryer up and running. 

Replaced wheels and pins. Super easy! 

There was a great sale on the most common parts, so I purchased high wear items in addition to these. Once inside, there was years of dust and lint to be cleaned, lumps of it. So this tidying up was the majority of the job. Replacing the components was basic. All moving parts not replaced were removed, cleaned, and re-lubed. Rollers, idler, idler arm. Anything that moves was inspected. The pulley seemed to be of higher qualify than the original aluminum. I can't tell what it's made of, but it seems harder, therefor more durable. I bought two belts, the price was great. Replacing the belt by itself would have been about fifteen to twenty minutes, if you are less than moderately handy. The pulley was reverse thread, and took a bit of experience, but having done it once, not more than the average person could handle. These guys continue to provide a terrific service, thanks!
