How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP4012072 / 12400035 Flat Style Oven Igniter Kit

Simply removed the igniter, replaced it with the new one. 

Replaced old igniter by disconnecting the connector plug at rear of the oven then pulled the wire through the insulation at the bottom of the oven. Reversed process to install the new igniter, which was an exact fit. Did not need to remove the back panel. 

After 10 years of service our Magic Chef gas range suddenly stopped igniting the oven burner even though the broiler burner worked just fine. I assumed it was the igniter. But I pulled the lower plate put from the oven and could see the igniter was glowing. After digging around on the internet I found the forum here at APP and after reading through several threads I found it was possible for the igniter to be bad and still glow. Mine was glowing orange when it should have been almost white. That difference in heat corresponds to a difference in amp draw through the igniter and the oven's control board said that amp draw meant failed igniter. I bought the part from APP (best price I could find). 2 days later it showed up and after a few minutes - really took longer to clean inside and around the oven than the replacement - I was back in business. Really just an unplug, 2 screws and replug. Thanks APP 

I replaced the igniter. Now instead of taking an hour and a half to preheat it now takes less than 10 minutes. 

A new ignitor was installed, and a new light switch was installed 

Since all the other igniters were operating properly I just had to change out the 1 bad igniter. Like everyone else, The burner retaining screw broke right away. I decided to change it from underneath. Removed the 4 screws holding the cooking surface to the chasis. There are 8 screws in pairs, 1 upper and 1 lower. You just need to remove the upper 4. Prop up the cooking surface. Remove the wire and then the 1 screw holding the igniter in the burner. Igniter should slide right out. Place the new igniter in place carefully to not damage the ceramic tip. Replace wire. Done. 

So proud of myself! I am a 72 yr old female! Took me 2 1/2 hours but I did it. I've always been a little handy so I hoped I could do it myself. Your video helped along with a few others from You Tube. My stove is about 20 yrs old and it didn't have the plug. I had to splice the wires together. That was hard cause I had to stretch my neck, arms and shoulder way into the back of the stove to do it. The hardest part was twisting the wires together and putting the cap on and then taping it. I just took my time and concentrated to be sure I did it right. Pizza tonight!!! 

I replaced the ignitor for the broiler and the oven temperature probe.
