How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6977680 / W11393685 Gearcase

I was able to do a transmission replacement. 

Had to replace the gearcase (inclds bearings) assembly. Video on AppliancePartsPros.com made it easy! I was able to avoid the spanner wrench purchase with the use of a pipe wrench. The machine runs smooth now. I recommend putting a little bearing grease on the splines before setting the tub. While it was apart I cleaned the water inlet screens. 

Replaced the gear case. 

Replaced the gearbox. 

Pulled the old gear case and replaced it with a new one from AppliancePartsPros.com. Followed the instructional video which was very helpful. Only issue I had was putting the washing basket back onto the new gear case spindle. It slid down only halfway. Had to use a scrap piece of 2x4 to hammer the basket down onto the spindle until it was fully seated. From there I could get the spanner nut on and was able to get it seated the rest of the way. Other than that the installation went very smooth.

There were 2 symptoms. One - the clothes were not getting clean even though they got wet and the spin cycle dried them well. The second symptom is one we know now should have been more obvious - the wash cycle was very noisy, which in hindsight was the wash plate sliding on the spindle. AppliancePartsPros.com helped me diagnose it - Washplate not spinning. Removal of the wash plate confirmed that the spindle and washplate were worn completely smooth. (comparison with pictures on AppliancePartsPros.com were useful). The replacement videos were excellent and gave me confidence I could do the job (I am a mechanical guy; but not an appliance repairman). They also identified the spanner wrench that I needed. Like everyone else, getting the washing machine back online was the mission for our household. Two days later, I had the parts. The repair took a while but I did it in one pass - didn't have to undo or re-do anything. Connected hoses, plugged it in and it worked! Couldn't have done it without AppliancePartsPros.com. I purchased parts from a competitor of yours but eventually realized the part I bought would not fix the bearing, that was bad. Your video showed how easy it was and made me support you guys. Thank you for the video and for giving me the confidence to handle the job. When I moved the washer out I saw the ring of grease and knew it was also a bad bearing. Replaced the gearcase
