There were 2 symptoms. One - the clothes were not getting clean even though they got wet and the spin cycle dried them well. The second symptom is one we know now should have been more obvious - the wash cycle was very noisy, which in hindsight was the wash plate sliding on the spindle.
AppliancePartsPros.com helped me diagnose it - Washplate not spinning.
Removal of the wash plate confirmed that the spindle and washplate were worn completely smooth. (comparison with pictures on AppliancePartsPros.com were useful).
The replacement videos were excellent and gave me confidence I could do the job (I am a mechanical guy; but not an appliance repairman). They also identified the spanner wrench that I needed.
Like everyone else, getting the washing machine back online was the mission for our household. Two days later, I had the parts. The repair took a while but I did it in one pass - didn't have to undo or re-do anything. Connected hoses, plugged it in and it worked!
Couldn't have done it without AppliancePartsPros.com. They helped me identify the broken part, identify the tools I needed, how to do the work, and sent OEM parts asap.
