How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6013836 / WP9742945 Spray Arm Retainer

Extracted the broken part from the center pump housing with a large screw extractor and simply put in the new part. 

No tools required. Removed broken end of retainer screw. Made sure all parts we're still in place. Put in new retainer screw. 

I found the lower spray arm bearings were worn thin. I replaced them along with new retainer. This cost very little money. It seemed to help about 50% of the problem. After searching around for cracks,seal or other damage I removed the steam vent cover (grate in upper corner of inner door panel. The bottom set of holes were filled solid with over 10 years of STUFF. Cleaned out the cover and the pocket behind it ( real easy). No more leaks. I think that any spray that went into the vent would be redirected up and over the STUFF and through the vent openings in the door panel. Vent cover just pulls for with finger effort and might be a good thing to check periodically. 

Screwed on the new spray arm retainer 

Replaced upper and lower wash arm bushings(bearings), AND removed the articulated vent assembly and replaced the wax motors(old one no longer worked). The technical manual says to use a screw driver to remove the vent louver. This is true on a NEW washer; the old one has that louver practically welded on. I made a fixture to rotate the louver without breaking it as many parts are no longer available. The rest of the repair was academic. Washer is as quiet as the day I bought it; the main culprit was the radial bearing as it was missing the flange. 

Screwed it in arm in dishwasher fit perfectly 

3 minutes to remove and inspect affected parts. 3 minutes to search and find parts on appliencepartspros.com. 3 minutes to complete order. 3 days to get the parts with standard delivery. 3 minutes to install the new parts. Works great.
