How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6013747 / WP9707223 Stand Mixer Retaining Dowel Pin

This was the first time I attempted to take apart a small appliance. When I got everything disassembled I found that the mixer needed a new Gasket and a new Dowel Pin. I found AppliancePartsPros.com online, contacted them, and ordered the new parts. I was especially pleased that they had a video on their site to show me how to disassemble the mixer and re-assemble it. This video gave me the confidence to complete the project. My wife can now continue all of her baking with the same machine she has been using for over 30 years. She loves that mixer and had a big smile on her face when I turned it on and it sounded like it was new. Thank you for the great support. 

Replace bearings etc. Only one part didn’t fit so I used the old. 

I replaced the planetary, shaft bearing and a few of the gears. I also put a bunch of grease around the gears. We have used this mixer regularly for the past 15 years and I did a pretty extensive overhaul. The only thing I wasn’t able to do is figure out how to make the mixer quieter. I wish they had a part for that. Appliance parts pros is the best. Great videos with plenty of close ups and tips on how to make the repair. Simple tools needed, nothing fancy (except the snap ring pliers). Parts got to me within a couple days. 

The Dowel Pin in my 18 year old Kitchen Aid Pro6 mixer had crumbled. 1) Removed all of the original grease that was well past its usage date. 2) Borrowed snap ring plier from father-in-law (haven't needed one of these until this fix job) 3) Removed and inspected all of the gears (took plenty of pictures along the way) 4) Established the cause of the issue as being the dowel pin. 5) Ordered replacement parts (went ahead with worm follower gear as well since the original was showing some signs of wear) 6) Re-applied plenty of grease to all gears (make sure to use FOOD GRADE grease) 7) Put the mixer back together (good thing for the pictures since it had been a week) 8) Gave it a whirl, and it is a happy mixer once again Overall this was an fairly easy fix, with the biggest pain being the grease removal. 

Removed and replace with the part I order.

I took the KitchenAid mixer apart until I found the broken part. The only slightly difficult part is removing a circlip - with a circlip removal tool, the repair was easy. After replacing the Dowel Pin and reassembling the mixer, it works great! 

I replaced both the worm gear and the hub gear. These are the gears that take the biggest beating. Lubed it all up and reassembled. Works like a new mixer. 

Removed the cowling and gear case cover, removed the circlip, slid the bevel gear up, drove the remainder of the sheared pin out with a drift, dressed the gear shaft with a file, the new pin slid right in. Then it was just a matter of reassembly. The original speed control (9703328) apparently was discontinued but the replacement (WP9706648) seems to be a good substitute ( just had to clip the unstitched wire). 

First, I watched a video. Seemed easy enough. Then I took my KitchenAid Pro 600 apart and looked inside gear box. Exactly like video. So took apart and cleaned used parts. Bought new and had to take one quick look at parts sheet when they arrived and reassembled. Loaded with grease, cleaned it all up and gave it to church. Machine broke because I was using it for bread and the machine is really not intended for someone who makes a dozen loafs a week. So I purchased a KitchenAid Commercial unit and it works just fine.
