How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6009427 / WP4452396 Microwave Door Torsion Spring (Rh)

Replaced spring. Could not find the correct part number anywhere. There are 2 springs that cross-cross for a stainless steel door model. The part diagram shows only one. There are 2 part numbers, and they’re specific to each side. Prob is, every chat room or forum mentions a “left” and a “right” side. Well, they cross cross, meaning they both touch the left and right sides! Which is which? So I ordered both. Some online resources recommend replacing both at the same time. They’re expensive, so I elected to replace just the one that was broken and kept the other as a spare. Side note: I originally ordered the parts from another source. I received 2 springs, but they were IDENTICAL, though labeled differently. And, the 2 I received were the same as the one that wasn’t broken. So I ended up with 3 of the same one, but not a replacement for the broken one. Both are being returned. They appeared to be returns or re-packaged items. The ones from AppliancePartsPros.com appeared to be new/unopened/OEM. 

Video was great - impossible to get to springs without the video! This was 3rd time the springs needed replacement so the job is getting easier. However, Control Panel is very difficult to remove and replace with an oven unit installed in the cabinet. Next time I might try to loosen the whole oven/microwave unit and slide it out a few inches. I have not checked to see if this is possible. As a minimum, it is a good idea to put masking tape at the top and bottom corners of the entire unit to avoid scratching the cabinet as the Control Panel and vertical trim strips are removed. With the unit in the cabinet, there isn't clearance to flip the Control Panel over out of the way when removed so you need a towel to rest the control panel on (face down) when you slide it into space above the microwave (to avoid scratching panel finish). Also (from experience) the interior light bulb lasts about as long as springs so it is a good idea to replace that as well while the microwave is slid out. Overall a very doable job with the video as a guide. 

Door spring replacement tip worked fine. Light bulb a little more difficult. Could not move complete oven from the wall without causing damage to decorative molding... Solution; metal trim on sides of the oven has screws towards the bottom end- when removed -the trim can be slid down and off. This exposes the 2 screws on the control panel - when removed - panel can be moved enough to take out the vent and the microwave can then be slid out enough for the bulb to be replaced. 

I ordered new springs and a new glass door .I had to rethread one screw on door because it was stripped .all parts ordered fit perfectly .the order was delivered on time .thank you 

Using the directions provided by the company access to the door was relatively easy. Taking pictures of the existing assembly is a very good idea. The replacement of the bars required only a pair of needle nose pliers and some patience. The bars we chose to replace with the more powerful version per a manufacturer service bulletin which fixed the problem with the door dropping uncontrollably. 

Removed lower trim, removed door front and replaced torsion springs 

Taking the door apart, installing new spring, reinstalling the door. Easy to remove the door but another pair of hands would be helpful when reinstalling the door. 

Took apart as directed. However, putting the new springs in place was not at all evident since neither broken spring was in place. Finally found pictures after considerable searching which provided simple guidance. As they say, one picture is worth..... Suggest you consider providing pictures along with text to greatly speed the fix. It should/would have been a half hour job rather than three hours wasted on a lengthy search for the pics. 

Dissembled unit, replaced both microwave door torsion springs, then reassembled unit.. 

Replaced the spring that failed. This, unfortunately, is a yearly occurrence so I have become somewhat proficient at replacing the door springs.
