How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP4009169 / 12002355 Thermistor Kit

Replaced thermistor for defrost cycle. 

Replaced defrost thermostat, replaced frig thermistor. Good experience. Excellent support and assistance for Maytag. 

Looked in AppliancePartsPros.com at the trouble shooting guide for my model refrigerator. Found what seemed to be the trouble I was having and ordered the recommended part. Also watched the video for instructions on how to install the part I ordered which was very helpful in that it directed me to the area where I could find the part I needed to replace. Following those instructions, I dismantled the light fixture at the top of the inside of the refrigerator and located the thermistor that I needed to replace. Getting the old thermistor out was the hardest part of the job. Once that was accomplished, the rest was easy. My 14 year old Maytag is now working like new. 

Replaced electronic control board which did not change anything. Replaced freezer temperature sensor which solved the problem. Freezer stays within 0 to -5 and no more ice buildup and leaking drain pan. Horray! 

Ordered new electronic control board. Overnight via fedex. Took less than 10mins to install. Fridge works like new. 

Ordered a thermistor kit. Now this thermistor was replaced on 7.20.2024. Sadly it failed in a short time. Also this unit was purchased new in 2004. A week before the 5 year compressor warranty was due to expire the compressor quit. Warranty service was done. Also for unknown reasons the repair tech decided to place a plastic wedge in the damper door to keep it at a certain opening. The temperature did fluctuate a bit but I left it as he did it. So when the thermistor failed a few weeks ago I decided to replace the damper door along with the thermistor. Easy straightforward job. Watching Simon on the repair videos helps. The same with my washer/dryer/neighbors machines. I enjoy doing the repairs. I recommend all those in need to APP. One thing I learned repairing my own appliances. The panels/covers etc mainly snap together. Use gentle force to pry the plastic. Take your time. ohh, pricing is very fair on OEM parts. I learned the hard way . Buy OEM parts if you intend to keep the machine. 

In retrospect I found a website that had all the diagnostics and the force defrost mode. This enabled me to at least see if the defrost heater coil worked which it did on command. But I didn't get that till later so I just ran the whole panoply of parts that would address this issue including defrost thermostat, circuit board, both thermistors. Replacing the thermostat alone is about $300 in labor and parts so no matter how much money I blew buying parts at this site it's still way ahead and now I know everything about this dumb fridge. Apparently, the motherboard has a relay that flops out after about 7 years so mine is just on target. It can't send the signal for the compressor to shut off. Also my thermostat or my thermostors were faulty And I couldn't tell which so I just replaced them all. One nice thing about the diagnostic codes is that you can make the damper mechanism open and close which can be another reason why your fresh food fridge is not cooling. It gets stuck. Anyway this website is great It has some cool videos reasonable prices and they get stuff to you in a hot second even with standard shipping so thank you. 

I originally replaced the thermistor in the freezer. That fixed my problem for less than a week. So I decided to replace both thermistors & the electronic control panel. 

Came so close to buying new refrigerator until I saw the price of a new one. Looked online and found AppliancePartsPros.com.
