I used the repair kit ordered from APP. I was amazed at the extremely quick delivery time--ordered Friday pm and received the kit Saturday am!
I took my Whirlpool Duet apart by following a video of a somewhat similar unit repair on YT. I replaced the drum roller wheels which were slightly smaller( 1/8 inch less diameter) than the new wheels. I then replaced the drum belt wheel guide. This guide was the apparent source of the loud noise and my problem. The bushing on this guide wheel was gouged out on one side causing it to bounce up and down on the steel shaft it was seated on and create the clanking/rattling noise.
There was a tremendous amount of lint covering most everything (1/4--1/2 inch thick) I took some time to vacuum it out completely. Some of it was black like it had been on fire--so much for ever leaving the house with the dryer on!
After reassembly with new dryer parts installed, the unit is so quiet you need to be fairly close to it (10-15 feet) to know it is running! So the bottom line of my repair project is that I saved around $250 over the $40 the repair kit cost ($32+$8s/h). I would be very confident in saying most every pro repair guy would not have cleaned out the lint buildup but only installed the new parts as required. I ended up jury rigging a new gasket around the exhaust housing I needed to remove to take out the drum. We will see how my gasket performs but it has to be better than the cheap foam one that was totally disintegrated...
Some final advice, take lots of pictures before you plow forward to dismantle your unit. Although YT videos really help a lot, you can't count on finding your exact unit in any posted video. My dryer is 8 years old and in several ways very different from the unit shown in the repair video I followed.
Good luck!
