Internet search indicated that worn brushes is a likely culprit. I ordered the replacement brushes from AppliancePartsPro which they had in stock; they also had reasonable surcharge (approx $12 for 2 day delivery) for expedited delivery (as compared to Amazon's partner).
The replacement brushes arrived on schedule. Following internet/YouTube instructions, I installed them and the washer is working again!
