Replaced the springs and rods (dampers) on all 4 sides of the washer tub. The new springs do not seem appreciably stronger than the old ones, but the washer works after the replacement. I suspect that some of the plastic bushings that allow the springs to move and ride up and down the rods, get sloppy, so that the tub does not stay centered and throws the clothes out of balance.
Easy fix, remove screws that hold brackets that hold top down - behind the washer controls. Remove 4 screws that allow you to remove the access panel behind washer. You can now undo the plugs that go up to the control panel as well as a little (1/4") hose that goes from tub to control panel. Next lift up back side of top of washer, then pry open front lid of washer. Remove top of washer. You can remove the 4 rods/springs with your hands (pull up corner of tub). Might need screwdriver to pry plastic bushing that holds top of rod to side of washing machine frame.
Replace one rod at a time, then re-assemble all. Easy Screws that hold on bracket may need a 3/8 ? socket or a better screw driver than I used.
