I ordered the Maytag Latch-Door mechanism and was able to get a service manual from appliancepartspros.com.
I followed instructions, disconnected power FIRST, and removed the inner door panel screws and the inner and outer doors came apart. I was then able to disconnect the power leads to the electronic latch door mechanism and remove the whole assembly. The assembly was loosely attached to the inside of the outer door by plastic posts and squeeze levers. I compared the OEM part with the replacement part (they were identical) except that the replacement part was in the OPEN position. I was able to use a small screwdriver to manually cycle the mechanism on the OEM latch back to put it back in the OPEN position. I put the assembly back in and re-connected the power leads and screwed the doors back together. It did take some time to "fit" everything back together. I turned the power back on and EUREKA, the door now closes and latches as it should. I ran a dish wash cycle and it appears normal. Now there is another part to the door latch mechanism that is attached to the TOP of the dishwasher, under the counter. It would involve removing the dishwasher from the counter to access this part. I did not do this.
I was concerned that the control board was fried due to a power surge but the dishwasher now seems to work normally. The part I ordered, Latch Door Assembly, only has a micro switch on it so it now seems unlikely that an electrical surge would damage this part and not the computer control board. I think the power surge just caused the Latch Door Assembly to "flip" to the closed position and it was stuck and needed manual "input" from the screwdriver.
