The dog retaining one of the springs of the centrifugal start switch had broken off, a field fix was not feasible, and the internal parts of the motor are not available as service components, prompting a motor replacement.
The replacement motor was a perfect fit, although the square plastic wrenching flats of the fan threaded onto the rear shaft crumbled on attempted removal, forcing removal from the rear of the dryer with an improvised tool.
