I called Appliancepartspros for help and they promptly sent another "new" replacement timer.
I installed the new timer which can only go in one way and have been running the dryer 2 weeks now and so far the new timer is starting and stopping in just about the correct position per the faceplate cycle pattern. Looks like I am good-to-go!
