Replace valve purchased. A friend had a Whirlpool Cabrio with the exact same problem. He replace valve and all worked fine. Sounds like a common problem - which is ridiculous given the age and cost of the washer. I did replace the valve and everything seems to be working fine. There is a video on YouTube that shows exactly how to replace the valve. Search "Cabrio Valve"
