The idler pully for the belt had partially collapsed, allowing the belt to get caught in the pully or the pully to jump up and down, contacting the drum. I replaced the idler pully, pully shaft snap ring, dryer belt and the door switch (from a previous failure).
I also cleaned the inside of the dryer and super glued some of the felt insulation that had come loose.
It works like a new dryer!
