The fix was to replace the timer. A very easy fix. Remove the dial, remove the fasteners on the back and top of the back cover of the control panel and remove the back cover. There are two blots on the face of the timer that you remove and the timer (with all wires still attached) can be taken out of the back of the control panel. I disconnected each wire on the existing timer one at a time and attached that wire on the new timer at the appropriate location. Reinstalled the timer and the panel and that was it. Works great and solved the problem.
