Since it looked like the timer control was not advancing correctly I ordered the timer for the machine from Appliance Pro, which had the best price I found on the internet. After watching a couple of how to videos I was able to replace the timer in 10 to 15 minutes with no problem, and this 20 year old Maytag was back up and running. One note you should make sure the safety lid switch is working properly before you go to the expense of ordering a timer.
