Washer was making loud grinding sound during agitation (no noise during spin cycle). Took front panel off and discovered motor housing was rubbing on base of machine. Initially I thought it might be the bearing but since there was no noise on spin cycle, I ruled that out. I replaced the 3 piece apron with the apron conversion kit and the problem was solved. Video of the procedure was very helpful.
I subsequently replaced the tub dampening straps as the washer was still a bit loud (not a metal sound but more plastic sounding) during agitate cycle. Sadly it still is making that noise but I think that may be more a factor of how this machine works. I cannot find any indication of banging so I think it is just how the tub is "thrown" back and forth.
Very happy I made this repair for a fraction of what it would have cost to have a repairman come or to replace the machine.
