The instructions that came with the replacement smaller surface heating element provided no help about how to open the top of the range, so I checked the internet. I found several videos on replacement of surface elements in flat top ranges, but none for our particular range, so I Google-searched a simple question, “How to open the top of a 6898VVD Magic Chef range”. The AI Overview answer had several points, most of them not useful, except for the last one: “Hidden Clips: There might be hidden spring clips between the top panel and the front control panel in the seam. To release them, you can try sliding a putty knife into the seam about 5 inches away from the right and left sides of the stove and pushing back on the clips.” After pulling our range out from the bay where it sits in our kitchen cabinet and disconnecting the power cord, I looked for a hinge at the back of the flat top, but found none. I did see two screws pointed forward, one at each back corner just below the frame of the glass top. I partially loosened those two screws, and then started poking with a putty knife in the seam at the front of the glass top, as the AI Overview suggested. I saw that the top of front control panel had a slightly higher region or boss in the range of 2” to 3” from the left edge of the frame of the glass top and another identical boss in the range of 2” to 3” from the right edge of the frame of the glass top. The front edge of the frame of the glass top essentially sat on these two bosses, i.e., there was virtually no gap above these bosses. By pushing the putty knife about an inch into this thin gap on top of each boss, the hidden clip at that corner was released, and then that corner of the frame of the glass top could be raised a fraction of an inch, although not much farther because of the absence of a hinge at the rear edge of the frame of the glass top. It turned out that the two forward-pointing screws at the back actually held two hooks into slots at the back, and by completely removing those two screws, those two hooks could be disengaged. With the hooks disengaged, the flat top could be lifted off the stove, and since the wiring cables were long enough, the flat top could be flipped over and laid upside down on the adjacent counter top. With the flat top on the counter top, replacement of the smaller surface heating element went fairly quickly.
