Loud grinding noise during spin down. Replaced the splutch twice, noticed the inner splutch gear was getting chewed up.
Noticed 1/2" end play in the splined transmission shaft, which allowed the splutch teeth to come apart, and grind. Did not think the transmission shaft should go in and out by 1/2".
Ordered a new W11454734 transmission and 3rd new splutch. Sure enough, the new transmission has *no* end play, the shaft does not move in and out.
Installed all, working like new!
Note: I found a simple way to get the old transmission to release from the drum hub (it quite sticks).
After the transmission bolts on the bottom are backed out by an inch, from the top, open the door, remove the agitator cap and back the top agitator bolt out by 1/2" inch. Strike the top agitator bolt straight down (I used my soft blow hammer head down) and when the bolt goes down, this means the transmission splines have released from the hub. Tilt again and pull/wriggle the now released transmission off.
No need to remove the top lid, basket ring, or agitator basket. Simpler.
