It turned out one of the rollers had frozen: the dryer is 13 years old. I couldn't believe Maytag designs the rollers with no lubricant - asking for trouble. I replaced both rollers and the one burned-up shaft. While I was at it, replaced the front drum bearings and the belt-tensioner pulley (also called a bearing, which showed signs of overheating.)
