I obtained a new inlet valve before starting the repair. Upon pulling the washer out I saw that the sump was defective-mice had chewed two holes in it. Note also that pouring water into the unit did not fill the sump. I patched the sump and the washer worked as usual for two complete washes. Today will see the new sump and drain valve installed and, hopefully, complete the repair.
