This wing nut is designed for use in many types of small engine lawn and garden equipment. It is a single piece nut that has dual wings located 180 degrees apart. Each of the wings on the nut comes out of a round base that offers a flat surface. Wing nuts are most commonly used in low-torque situations where it's common to need to make adjustments or go through a disassembly process. These wing nuts can be tightened and released without additional tools.Under tightening, overuse, thermal expansion, vibration, or being embedded into a surface can cause damage to wing nuts. This can make one or both of the wings disconnect, which requires a replacement wing nut. Wing nuts may also rust or develop other buildup, which can make them weaker and less durable.
