This blade adapter is made to attach a lawn mower cutting blade to the drive shaft of a push mower. Though it is made of sturdy metal and is tightly fastened to the mower's drive, the adapter and blade may wear and loosen over time. This can present a dangerous situation as well as poor cutting performance for the blade. Also, each adapter has a small insert tab that fits into the blade attachment. This tab, called a “key,” is actually a shear pin. Should the blade strike a solid object, the key will sheer off, preventing the blade from coming loose or suffering irreparable damage. The solution to either of these problems is to replace the blade adapter. The blade itself should be closely examined to make sure it fits the new adapter with no wobble or slack. To replace the blade adapter, turn the mower on its side with the air filter on top. Use a ratchet to remove the bolt that attaches the blade and adapter to the drive shaft. Make certain to fit the new adapter key into the keyway on the shaft. Always use a replacement part like this one, that is OEM certified to be identical to the original. The blade support is found between the blade and the bolt. As its name suggests, it is designed to provide support for the blade to ensure it is secured to the base of the mower deck. It is made of metal and it will need a replacement if it becomes worn or damaged. To replace a blade support or blade spacer, first, the engine needs to be cool. Remove the wire and boot from the spark plug. Tip the mower back on its handle assembly and use a piece of wood or sturdy object to hold the cutting blade in place. Remove the old blade support and blade. When installing the new one, ensure that the blade's sharp edge faces away from the mower deck. Re-thread and torque the bolt between 40 and 50 ft-lbs.
