This brake spring restores the tensioning force needed for the appliance's brake mechanism so the drum/rotating assembly holds and releases correctly. Replaces a worn or broken brake spring to help restore normal stopping behavior. What it does:
- Provides tension for the brake assembly so the drum or shaft can stop and hold when power is removed
- Commonly replaced when brake action is weak, noisy, or the drum keeps turning after power-off
- Helps prevent uncontrolled rotation that can affect spin/stop cycles or safety
- Simple mechanical part — no electrical connections or calibration needed
What's included: Includes one brake spring. Install notes:
- Disconnect power to the appliance before starting any repair to avoid shock or injury
- Inspect surrounding brake components and mounting points; replace any damaged hardware
- Use proper tools to remove and install the spring — springs are under tension and can snap back

Whirlpool shaking Willy P. • Victorville , CA • May 19, 2019
Weekend laundry became very noisy, our 1987 Whirlpool washer began doing a dance across the floor and the drum was banging into the inner cabinet. After doing some research and watching a few videos on Appliance parts pros website. I inspected the washer and noticed one leg the rubber coating disintegrated, decided to change all four legs, springs and lid switch. Hardest part of the job is getting the cabinet together. Ops check good.

Washer would fill but then would not agitate or spin there was a burning rubber smell Karen G. • Katonah , NY • November 28, 2014
All's well that ends well, but the getting there was a bit of a pain. The web site suggests 3 possible causes for my problem (incl. the burning smell). I began with the first two since they were inexpensive compared to the motor, which was the third cause (and also the least often cause). There is no way to visibly tell if the motor is bad or not.
After replacing the clutch assembly, which did have some plastic pins broken off) and the motor coupling (which actually looked fine, but the...
