It is located in the base of the dishwasher's tub to hold the heating element firmly in place. The push-on retainer nut keeps the heating element securely connected to the dishwasher's electrical system while allowing for easy removal and replacement when necessary.

A bit of searching on the internet narrowed the problem down to either the heating element or the control board. As I am not much of a diagnostician I decided to replace both. Along this same line, I would never have attempted these repairs if it hadn't been for the clear, easy to understand repair videos provided for each part. Replaced broken part. This was a simple fix. The only complication was that SEARS sent me the WRONG PART THREE TIMES and the first part they sent WAS BROKEN. I found these guys on line, found the part by number, looked at a photograph instead of crappy drawing, and had the part in three days. Should have come here first.
