Jam nuts are usually fastened on with another standard nut and then the two nuts are tightened against each other. Jam nuts can be easily identified from a standard nut because they are roughly half the size. Jam nuts can be lost while making repairs because of their small size. If lost, it might not affect the idler bracket immediately, but over time the standard nut may begin to slip or unthread. Therefore, the jam nut should be replaced as soon as possible. When making this replacement, be sure to unthread the standard nut as well and then tighten them both together using a wrench.
