Carolyn, you don't really "buff out" stainless steel panels. First you have to try and sand the damaged area with sand paper for metal from an auto parts supply dealer. Make sure you sand "with the grain" of the panel. Depending on the depth/direction of the scratch you may have a "larger finished area". Once you've finished the sanding process you would want to use some hot water and soap to wash off the panel then use some stainless steel cleaner and polish to replenish the oils and shine the panel. It may be worth a try.
