Kilgore, In order to get the door handle off you just lift straight up on. You do have to use some force behind it. You will also want to try to pull down because it is possible for the handles to be on upside down but lifting straight up usually is the way to get them off.

I cannot remove the door handle which has loosened on my Frigidaire refrigerator purchased on 10/09/2016. Following the instructions provided does not work. Handle cannot be removed by pushing straight up on the handle. If I cannot get a satisfactory resolution, I will have Lowes pickup the unit since Frigidaire customer service is worthless and I cannot repair the unit as instructed. My contacts with Frigidaire Customer Service was totally worthless. Lowes has been very helpful but are limited in what they can do. The picture here is not worthwhile in showing how the handle is secured.

Albert, There should be set screws in the end cap of the handles, at both ends. You'll need an "Allen Wrench" to loosen and remove the handles. " Position freezer handle end caps over upper and lower pre-installed shoulder bolts that are fastened into door, ensuring the holes for the set screws are facing towards the refrigerator door. While holding handle firmly against door, fasten upper and lower Allen set screws with the Allen wrench. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to install refrigerator handle. Ensure the holes for the set screws are facing towards the freezer door. Ensure Handle Set Screws are Facing Each Other with Doors Closed". You may have to tap up on the bottom of the door handle(s) once the set screws are removed or loosened.

Len, The only way to get the door handle off is to lift it off. You may want to try to pull it down in case they were put on upside down. If the handles are on properly then you would lift straight up with a jerk. Most likely the screws on the handle itself on the inside have loosened up and is causing the issue.
