Hello Mona, Black goes to terminal L1, Violet goes to terminal P, Red goes to terminal L2, H1 and H2 go to the surface element and is color coded determined by which element is being addressed.

Don, The 3 L1 would have the black wire, the 5 L2 will have the red wire, the 2p will have the yellow or purple wire, the h1 and h2 will have the same color wire on them either orange, brown, white, or yellow, whichever color there is 2 of. The 2 p is for the pilot so if you end up having 3 yellow wires then you would want to trace back the yellow to see where they go. One should go to the indicator light.

Jpate, You will want to check the wiring to the indicator light as the information that you provided on how you hooked the switch up is correct. Also check to see if there is power going to the indicator light. If there is power to the light then the light is bad and would need to be replaced. If the light does not have power you will need to check to see were you are loosing power from.
