Causes of a bad bake burner can include wear and tear from frequent use, clogging or blockage of gas ports, or damage from exposure to high temperatures and spills.

Symptoms of a bad bake burner include:

  • Uneven baking or cooking results
  • The oven not heating up properly or taking too long to reach the desired temperature
  • Visible damage or corrosion on the burner
  • The oven emitting unusual smells or noises during operation

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

For Ge Bake Burner W/Ignitor (Part Number: OEM9617397)

William for Model Number ZG287938P

The oven makes airborne soot after it has been lit for a while as well an unusual odor that persists for as long as the oven is used, not only at startup. Does anyone know what the problem might be and should I consider replacing the oven burner, the previous user of this oven burned something badly in the oven and I am afraid to use it for long baking periods? Any suggestions, maybe replace some of the parts that might have been affected when that person burnt whatever he/she was baking? Thank you, Bill

William, the burners can be cleaned and the flames would need to be checked to see if they are yellow or blue. If they are fully blue, then it is soot residue being seen. If they are yellow, then it would need to be verified if the range is converted properly to natural gas or LP, whichever the gas supply may be.

JP, As long as the unit is set up for LP then yes you would need to adjust the air shutters to get the flames right.

Paul, We would need the model number to properly assist with your question. In general if a gas range the igniter turns on but does not light and the burner will not light with a match then you will want to pull the orifice and check for it being clogged. If the orifice is good then most likely the issue would be with the burner valve if all the other burners are working except the one.

Hello. You will need to remove the bottom of the oven. Then remove the flame spreader and gain access to the burner. Remove the screws holding the ignitor in place on the burner, and remove the ignitor. Next remove the screws holding the burner in place. Reinstall in reverse order. Hope this helps.
