Sharon, You probably can't refurbish the grates, it would most likely cost more to refinish than to replace them. You may want to start keeping an eye on the size pots and pans, and the flame size when cooking. pitted porcelain or powder coat is usually due to excessive heat transfer from the bottom of the pan to the grate.
