Gandreol for Model Number JVM132K003

My landlord purchased this part under my request and I proceeded to install it. I have a couple of observations: a) The part was not branded GE (no logo) b) After having gained access to the interior side of the panel where the handle screws were going to be inserted I noticed that I had a problem: The hole is too large and the screw I received too long. So, I added a washer and a bolt in between the metal plate and the screw top. c) I tightened the two screws and proceeded to reassemble the inside door trim to cover. After 2 days of regular use the upper part of the handle broke, specifically the small cylinder that attaches to the handle and inserts into the door broke off from the main body of the handle. What did I do wrong? I think that what I received was either a non OEM part that is not as robust, OR that I was missing correct washers or other parts that need to go on the inside, before the screws... help please
