Hello Dominic, These will normally be compressed from the sides to dis-engage the tabs at the ends. To install it just snaps into place. A hole in the lens is normally caused by a bulb larger than the recommended 60 watt bulb being in place or the light being used as a night light instead of just a work area light. Since the light produces heat, the longer it is on, the more discolored the lens will become and will eventually have a burned place on it.
