Charles, The space will not make a difference as long as the tub seal is seated properly. Also check the the tub for cracks with it still leaking.

Michael, The agitator just pushes down over the agitator coupling and locks in around it. You may need to push really hard on it to get it to lock in place. If it will not lock in place then the agitator would be the most likely cause for the issue.

Hello Susi. You should be able to tighten the screw all the way down if it is not cross threaded. Check and make sure it is not and all parts are installed into the unit.
