This microwave thermostat is a temperature-sensitive safety switch that helps protect the unit from overheating. When the preset limit is reached, it interrupts power to the affected circuit to help prevent damage and erratic shutdowns.

  • Monitors temperature at its mounting location and opens the circuit if overheating is detected
  • Helps protect internal components from excessive heat
  • Common symptoms of a failed thermostat include: unit shuts off during cooking, won't start until it cools down, or has no power/no heat due to an open safety
  • Replace if the original tests open when it should be closed
What's included: One thermostat Install notes:
  • Disconnect power by unplugging the unit or switching off the circuit breaker before servicing
  • Microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge; only qualified persons should service and discharge the capacitor
  • Note wire locations before removal and transfer connections firmly to the new thermostat
  • Mount the thermostat securely and in the same position to ensure proper temperature sensing

Neil, Thanks for the question!!! Since your outlet is good the first check would be the line fuse.

The microwave randomly goes dead even when not being used. (By dead, I mean everything... the display, light inside when door open, control panel buttons, etc). It likewise randomly turns back on after a few minutes or hours. I checked the power source at the plug and it is OK. Would the fuse (thermoprotector) possibly cause this random on/off symptom or would it always off after the first time it is blown? I thought I would ask first to possibly eliminate it as a possible suspect before taking the unit apart to bench-test the fuse in case it cannot possibly randomly close/open the circuit.

1 Answer

Hello Hal, this may be a control board problem but first, take the microwave down and remove the outer case, check for a loose connection at the main 20 amp/fuse holder and the wiring connections at the cavity and magnetron thermostats.

Pat, For this model there will be 2 thermostats located behind the control panel in which one will show open and the other closed. These would not cause there to appear to be no power to the unit although you would want to check the buss fuse and also check the other thermal cutoffs in the unit as they could cause this issue.

Pat, Yes it is possible that if one of the thermostats is faulty that the display will be blank. Keep in mind there are 2 thermostats behind the control panel and one will show normally closed and the other Normally open.

My GE Spacemaker xl1800 microwave has power and all of the buttons on the keypad works but whenever I press one of the one touch sensor buttons it gives me a "sensor error-close door and press start" error. I've checked all three door sensors with an ohmmeter and the normally closed ones are fine but the normally open switch has a fluctuating resistance reading. I am not sure if this would have much of an effect on the microwave since the switch is open with the door closed anyways.

1 Answer

Pheng Lee, This normally open switch having fluctuating resistance then it would need to be faulty and will affect the operation of the unit.

John for Model Number PSB2201NSS01

The "thermostat-upper htr" PN WB21X10046 has burned out at least 5 times since we started using the Advantium a few years ago, the last time about 3 months ago. Is there an upgraded thermostat that can replace the original? Are there any upgrades or adaptions available to resolve what seems to be a major design problem? It appears that the thermostat is designed to function as a fuse with it melting or otherwise burning out thereby breaking the circuit which immediately stops the oven from working - as the new part has 0.0 ohms resistance and the burned out part has no continuity between the connectors a 'fuse' seems a suitable descriptor. All of the failures have occurred while using the convection function, never while using the microwave oven alone and the simple replacement of that thermostat immediately returns functionality to the oven. So, what's available to upgrade this thing to allow normal use of the oven?

1 Answer

John, Unfortunately we do not show any changes in the thermal cut off for the unit and would use the same as the original.

George, The only thermostat showing for this model microwave would be the magnetron thermostat that is available. The part number for that thermostat is WB24X410. As for where the one you are looking at would be located if on this unit would be on the top of the cavity when you remove the cabinet.

Mehmet, If the unit is heating sporadically then the issue would most likely be the thermostat on the magnetron which is part number WB27X10166.

Robert, The issue with the vent fan running and light staying on would be caused by a stuck relay on the control board. You will need to replace the control board for this issue.

Hello Tom, The thermostat in the front bottom should read open. It closes when hot so this is normal. If you look inside the unit you should find the mini manual. This will have a wiring diagram that you can use to find the faulty component. There is usually a troubleshooting flow chart on it also.
