The Defrost Sensor Assembly is an OEM part for LG refrigerators. It plays a critical role in the defrost system by monitoring the temperature of the evaporator coil to ensure that it remains at the optimal temperature to prevent frost buildup. The sensor sends signals to the control board, triggering the defrost cycle when necessary.

Over time, the defrost sensor assembly can fail due to wear and tear, electrical issues, or exposure to moisture and temperature fluctuations. When the defrost sensor malfunctions, it can cause improper defrost cycles, leading to excessive frost buildup, reduced cooling efficiency, or the refrigerator not defrosting at all.

Symptoms of a bad defrost sensor assembly include:

  • Excessive frost buildup on the evaporator coils
  • Refrigerator or freezer not maintaining the correct temperature
  • Increased energy consumption
  • Refrigerator not defrosting properly

This OEM LG part is also compatible with Sears/Kenmore.

Joe, You will want to check to see if there is a frost pattern on the evaporator coils for the freezer. If there is very little frost then this will be a sealed system problem that will require service.

Fredrick, This sounds like it would be a temperature issue with the freezer and would recommend checking the temperature of the freezer compartment and determining why the temperature is not correct.

Hello Charles, There are several things you will need to check. First off, is the center divider hot to the touch? If so, the condenser fan in the rear of the unit will need to be checked. If it is running, there is something blocking the air flow through the condenser coils behind the unit. If not, replace the fan motor WP61005323 if it is getting power but not running. If no problem is found with the condenser fan motor you will need to check to see if the compressor is running. If not and the compressor is hot, the start relay W11285096 has most likely failed. If it is running and the compressor is cool, you will need a Freon certified technician to diagnose and repair the sealed system.

Ron, the error code for your model is still refering to a defrost error, it states that the defrost sensor has not reached 46 degrees within 1 hour after starting defrost.

Vinnie for Model Number 209TRMFOHO59

Recently purchased LG GR-389-R (tall, skinny fridge) It wasn't cooling in the upper refrigerator compartment, but the lower freezer was nice and cold. The evaporator coils inside were covered in frost. I checked OHMS on the thermistor, went from 16.5 ambient, up to about 18.2 submerged in a glass of ice water. I checked continuity across the defrost heater element, my meter doesn't beep but just displayed 60-something. Since we defrosted the heat exchanger it's working well, but will probably relapse when the frost comes back.

Hello Vinnie, This sounds like the defrost circuit does have an issue but we are unfortunately unable to pull up parts for Canadian models. You should test the defrost thermostat and check the electronic defrost control board since these are common failures on this design.
