The Belt Tension Pulley is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. It is crucial for maintaining the correct tension on the dryer belt, ensuring that it runs smoothly and the drum turns properly during operation. This pulley helps to keep the belt aligned and prevents it from slipping, which is essential for the efficient performance of your dryer.

Symptoms of a bad Belt Tension Pulley include:

  • Unusual noises, such as squeaking or grinding, coming from the dryer when it is running.
  • The dryer drum failing to turn, even though the motor is running.
  • Excessive wear or damage to the dryer belt.

Causes of a bad belt tension pulley can include wear and tear from regular use, accumulation of lint and debris which may impede the pulley’s movement, or a failing bearing within the pulley assembly.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Belt Tension Pulley (Part Number: OEM18029586)

Hello Todd, This sounds like the idler pulley WP6-3700340 since the other parts you have changed pretty much cover the other causes of the complaint. The belt WP33002535 is what makes the noise, but it's because it's slipping over the part that is opposing rotation. As long as the belt looks good all of the way around, it shouldn't need replacement unless you just want a new one in while it's apart.

Hello Mike. Check and make sure the pulley has the c clip holding it onto the shaft where it can't slide off. Also, that is has washers on both sides of the pulley. There should be a lip on the pulley on the side away from the motor to prevent the belt from coming off the pulley. If not, you will need to replace the pulley WP6-3700340 on the unit. Hope this helps.

Carri for Model Number MDE9606AYW

Maytag dryer has been sqealing / buzzing when pushing the start button. Now it has stopped working and only buzzes when I press start button. I recently replaced the multi-temp thermostat. Dryer is heating well now, but won't run. It does run for 5 minutes if I press start button and assist the tumbler into turning. But then it automatically turns off. Do I need a new motor, high limit thermostat, pulley or something else all together? I do know my moisture sensor bar is loose, but was still working. Thank You.

Hello David. You will need to remove the belt from the pulley WP6-3700340 and see if it is bad. Turn the pulley by hand and see if the pulley drags on the shaft. Do not run the dryer before checking the pulley. if the pulley is tight on the shaft, you will need to replace the pulley. There is no way to adjust the tension on the belt. Hope this helps.

Hello Merle. You will need to disconnect the power to the unit. Then remove the door off the machine and the front panel. Once the front panel is removed, you will need to remove the front shroud assembly. Next you will need to remove the belt from the drum assembly. Be sure and look at how the belt is run around the pulleys for reinstall. Once the belt is removed, you will need to remove the drum from the dryer. You should be able to access the tension pulley now. You will need to remove the c-clip from the front of the pulley shaft. Remove the pulley and install the new pulley. Reinstall in reverse order. Hope this helps.
