The Bimetal Defrost Thermostat is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It plays a vital role in the defrost system, regulating the freezer temperature to prevent excessive frost buildup. The thermostat serves as a safety device by shutting off power to the defrost heater if the temperature gets too high, thereby protecting the appliance from overheating and potential damage. Its specifications include a 5-1/4" orange wire, a 25" brown wire, and a 1/2" clip.

You should replace the bimetal defrost thermostat if it becomes faulty. Over time, it can deteriorate due to normal wear and tear, electrical problems, or exposure to extreme temperatures, leading to malfunctioning of the defrost cycle.

Symptoms of a bad bimetal defrost thermostat include:

  • Excessive frost accumulation in the freezer
  • The refrigerator running continuously or not maintaining the proper temperature
  • The defrost heater failing to activate

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Bimetal Defrost Thermostat (Part Number: OEM18048204)

Mike

I have a kenmore 106 freezer on top model. Water was inside the fridge. I defrosted it and cleaned the tube. I was good for a month then more water. Noticed it wouldn't go into manual defrost. ohm'ed out the bi metal and found it was bad. Replaced it. Unplugged and plugged back in when I heard the fan stop. Heater came on. Two weeks now I have nothing in the freezer, when the fan stops running I feel the heater...no heat. Question, how many times should the fan in the freezer turn off each day and does the heater have to go on each time the fan stops. I can manually put into defrost but don't know if I have to. Will not pay 150-200 for a circuit board when the fridge cost me 380 12 yrs ago. Keep in mind it never stopped working and both the freezer and the fridge are still working. Thanks

Mike, The defrost control sounds like it would be the issue. The fan will shut off and on throughout the day but will go through defrost 3 times a day. If the defrost bimetal and heater check ok then the issue will be the timer.

Mark, This issue would be caused by a faulty defrost circuit. You will want to test the defrost thermostat and the defrost heater for continuity. If either does not have continuity then replace that part. If they both check good for continuity then replace the defrost control which will be part number WPW10503278.

MLM, The only way to get the defrost bimetal cold enough would be to get the temp down to 15 degrees. If you stick it on the evaporator with the unit running for 24 hours and then test it before installing.

LGR, To answer the first part of the question on the defrost bi metal. Coming off the actual bimetal there should be 2 wires. The orange wire will split off to 2 wires and one will go to the heater and the other to the control board. If you cut the thermostat out at the 2 wires right at the thermostat then you can splice the new thermostat in place. For being able to access the control board on the refrigerator you would remove the light cover, once the light cover has been removed, if you look up behind where the lights would be, you will see an opening on each side. Using a flat blade screwdriver and put it into the slot and push toward the front to release the control board housing. This will allow access to the control board for you.

Richard P. for Model Number MBR1953WES2

The freezer coils in my Whirlpool fridge MBR1953WES2 keep freezing up. I have located the service manual in the bottom of the fridge and can force defrost the fridge using the FD code. The fridge will continue to operate fine as long as I force defrost the fridge daily, if not the coils will freeze up again. Through the notes here it appears that the control board AP4366538 is fine as I can force defrost the fridge. So is the problem the defrost timer or defrost thermostat? If so, is AP4310486 the part that I need to replace?

1 Answer

Hello Richard. Based on the information you provided, if the unit has to be manually defrosted to clear the ice off the coils, you will need to order and replace the electronic control WPW10503278 in the unit. It is bad and is not going into the defrost cycle like it should and will need to be replaced. This is used as the defrost timer for this model.
